BLADE STEEL OPTIONS

SK4 Tool Steel contains chromium, molybdenum and vanadium and is known for its high hardenability and great toughness.

HSS (High Speed Steel) A typical HSS composition features chromium (4%), tungsten (approx. 6%), molybdenum (up to 10%), vanadium (around 2%), cobalt (up to 9%) and carbon (1%).

Importantly HSS air hardens after being worked to a high temperature whereas carbon or tool steel usually air anneals (becomes soft) if worked to a high temperature and left to cool naturally in air. 

Blue Paper Steel - a traditional Japanese description for a steel which approximates Western HSS. Blue Paper Steel is White Paper Steel with the addition of small quantities of chrome and wolfram. That makes the steel slightly less traditional, but improves some characteristics. Blue Paper Steel has better corrosion and chipping resistance than White Paper Steel, although it is definitely not stainless steel.
