Liogier rasps are manufactured in a small, family owned and run business near Lyon in France. These rasps have been produced at Liogier for many generations and are the gold standard for sculptors, cabinetmakers and any working of wood which requires hand shaping and finishing.
Hand cut rasps out perform machine made rasps because of their slight tooth irregularities. Each tooth is cut by hand using an appropriately sized and shaped punch and the tool is then hardened by one of two processes, the Traditional and the Sapphire. Traditional hardening is measurable on the Rockwell scale.
A traditional rasp measures about Rockwell 62 (about 800 Vickers) however the Sapphire hardening process is off the Rockwell scale and measures an astounding 3800 on the Vickers scale. Sapphire rasps are the tool of choice if you work man-made composites, extremely abrasive woods or even soft metals.
Stocking and Availability
The factory makes rasps more or less to order and as distributors for Australia and New Zealand, apart from a couple of dozen of the range which we stock - see Stock On Hand below - we also often order against firm orders. There is no other feasible business model possible to support such a luxury of choice; over 20 different hand rasp ranges, an extensive rotary rasp range and no fewer that 268 riffler options across 7 patterns and 7 lengths which amount to well over 1400 purchasing options in total.
Stitches
Rasps are available in a range of teeth size and densities from Stitch #2 to Stitch 15.
