Useful Reckoner tables

This data sheet is a compilation of useful ready reckoner and reference tables of interest to woodworkers.

We value corrections and comment - please email.

Tooth Pitch - tooth pitch is abbreviated in the imperial measurement world as teeth TPI per inch.  The Metric world uses millimetres between teeth. This table allows cross reference.

e.g. 1.0mm pitch  = 25.4tpi

Costing & Estimating - Use this table for deriving a $/super foot, $/cub mm, $/cub cm, $/cubic foot & $/cubic yard from a given $/cubic metre value.

e.g. My timber guy quotes in super feet (which is a older measurement equal to 144 cubic inches 12 x 12 x 1) and tells me the PNG Rosewood is $9.50 a Super Foot. Using the table I can determine a cubic metre equivalent rate of just over $4,000.

Linear Conversion from 1 Cubic Metre - using metric dimensions - Use this table to calculate how much linear stock makes up a CUBIC METRE for certain dimensioned stock. Values in the body of the table are in linear metres.

e.g How many linear metres of 225mm x 60mm stock adds up a cubic metre? Answer: 74.1 l/m.

Cubic Metre & Super Foot Conversions - Use these tables to convert super feet to cubic metres and cubic metres to super feet.

e.g. 65 super equals 0.1534 cubic metre

Log Volume Ready Reckoner - using metric dimensions to calculate cubic metre volume

Use this table as the first stage in estimating the cubic metre yield of a log.

Note that the calculated amounts in the table assume an ideal, fully usable, perfectly round log with no waste. To produce a more accurate estimate you will need to subtract amounts for cutting, boxed heart, sapwood, mudguts or other imperfection.

e.g I have a 400mm diameter log to break down which is 3 metres long, what is my theoretical yield? Answer: 0.377 cubic metres
