A "bench" chisel is a somewhat arbitrary term to specify the style of general purpose woodworking chisels used in the majority of woodworking pursuits. It follows therefore that a bench chisel is not a carving or turning or corner or mortice or patternmakers chisel.  In current times the bevel edge bench chisel has become the most widespread style supplanting in popularity the rectangular section "firmer" chisel, a dominant design of earlier generations.

Many chisel brands with long established names and reputations in western markets are now made entirely, or in part, in east Asia and are not the quality they once were.  These reputable brands are frequently passed off as "Swedish" or "British" made and can be marketed as so because of slack truth-in-labelling laws now common in many countries.

Stubai continue to manufacture their chisels in Austria from Austrian or German steel stock.  They offer two alternative steel compositions, their DIN standard and their in-house proprietary 'spezial' tool steel.  This means you have a choice of excellent or supreme.  The 'spezial' blades from Stubai routinely win when western chisels are assessed in bench chisel reviews.
