Brad-point woodworking bits are also known as dowelling bits or W point bits. The tip is optimised for cutting wood with a centre spur which engages the work first and stabilises the bit, the perimeter nickers then start a clean edged hole and the rakers clean out the waste. By comparison the majority of drill bits have tip geometries optimised for metals and usually make a much rougher hole is wood.
The Stubai range are made from carbon steel and suited to wood.
The average corner hardware store bit is made from high speed steel. It is also a fact that very poor quality drills are flooding the market many badged as HSS which are not in fact HSS or have never been hardened in manufacture.
We also offer modified HSS bits with an after market machined brad point tip. This offers the best of both worlds, the durability of HSS, a larger range of fractional sizes in both metric and imperial and a tip optimised for wood. While carbon steel bits need to used with some care so that they do not overheat and lose temper, HSS bits can be run red hot, will air harden and retain hardness. Carbon steel bits tend to air anneal when cooling if run too hot.
